As the Telugu Desam Party-Jana Sena-BJP coalition government in Andhra Pradesh led by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan celebrates the completion of its first year in office, a growing sense of anti-incumbency has set in among the state’s electorate.

The government, which came to power in a landslide victory in the 2014 state elections, is marking the milestone with much fanfare, including a major public meeting scheduled for Thursday. However, cracks have begun to show in the alliance, with increasing tensions between the partners and a perception that the government has failed to deliver on its campaign promises.

One of the key issues fueling the anti-incumbency sentiment is the state’s economic woes. Andhra Pradesh has struggled to regain its footing since the bifurcation of the state in 2014, which resulted in the loss of Hyderabad, the economic powerhouse and capital city, to the newly formed state of Telangana. The Naidu government has struggled to attract investments and create jobs, leading to widespread dissatisfaction among the state’s residents.

Additionally, the government’s handling of issues such as the construction of the new state capital, Amaravati, and the ongoing water disputes with Telangana have been criticized by the opposition and the public. The slow pace of development and the perceived lack of transparency in government decision-making have also contributed to the growing disenchantment with the ruling coalition.

The opposition parties, led by the YSR Congress Party, have seized on these issues and have been steadily gaining ground in the state. Recent by-election results have shown a shift in voter sentiment, with the TDP-Jana Sena-BJP alliance losing several seats to the YSR Congress.

As the government enters its second year, it faces the challenge of addressing the growing public discontent and regaining the trust of the electorate. The successful conduct of the public meeting and the government’s ability to deliver on its promises in the coming months will be crucial in determining the coalition’s political fortunes in the run-up to the 2019 state elections.
