Uber Introduces Helicopter Taxis for Amalfi Coast Getaways
In a move to alleviate the notoriously congested roadways of Italy’s picturesque Amalfi Coast, ride-sharing giant Uber has announced the launch of a new Uber Copter service catering to travelers. From July 26 to August 23, visitors will be able to reserve private helicopter transfers between the towns of Sorrento and Capri, bypassing the region’s infamously slow-moving traffic.
The Amalfi Coast, renowned for its stunning cliffside villages, winding seaside roads, and historic landmarks, attracts millions of tourists each year. However, the sheer volume of visitors has often led to gridlock conditions, frustrating travelers and locals alike. Uber’s new helicopter option aims to provide a more efficient and convenient mode of transportation, allowing passengers to soar above the congestion and enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the coast’s breathtaking scenery.
“We understand the challenges that come with navigating the Amalfi Coast during the peak summer season,” said Uber’s regional manager, Francesca Rossi. “By introducing Uber Copter, we’re offering travelers a unique and time-saving alternative to get to their destinations without the hassle of being stuck in traffic.”
The Uber Copter service will operate on a fixed schedule, with flights departing every 60 minutes from designated heliports in Sorrento and Capri. Passengers will be able to book their helicopter rides through the Uber app, with prices starting at €150 per person for a one-way trip. Uber has partnered with a local aviation company to provide the helicopter fleet and experienced pilots for the service.
In addition to the convenience factor, the Uber Copter experience is designed to be a luxurious and unforgettable part of the Amalfi Coast adventure. Each helicopter will accommodate up to six passengers, offering stunning panoramic views of the region’s iconic cliffs, azure waters, and historic villages. Passengers will also receive a complimentary glass of prosecco to toast their aerial journey.
The launch of Uber Copter in the Amalfi Coast is part of the company’s broader strategy to expand its services beyond traditional ride-sharing and into the realm of urban air mobility. Uber has been exploring the development of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, which could eventually transform the way people move around congested urban and coastal areas.
For now, the Amalfi Coast pilot program will serve as a test case for Uber’s helicopter taxi concept, providing valuable insights and feedback to inform the company’s future plans for air-based transportation solutions. As the summer season approaches, travelers to the Amalfi Coast can look forward to a new, elevated way to experience the region’s natural beauty and avoid the hassle of ground-based traffic.
