REAL ID Deadline Looms: What Travelers Need to Know

Travelers, take note: the deadline for the REAL ID requirement is just days away. Starting May 7th, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will require all air passengers 18 and older to present a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or another acceptable form of identification to board domestic flights within the United States.

The REAL ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, mandates that all 50 states and U.S. territories issue more secure driver’s licenses and identification cards that meet higher security standards. This federal law aims to strengthen national security and prevent fraudulent identification documents from being used for illicit purposes.

With the looming deadline, the TSA is urging air travelers to ensure they have the proper identification documents. “It’s critical that passengers check the expiration date on their driver’s license and other forms of ID now, and get a REAL ID-compliant license or other acceptable identification ahead of the deadline,” said a TSA spokesperson. Acceptable alternatives to a REAL ID-compliant license include a U.S. passport, military ID, or Global Entry card.

Failure to present a REAL ID-compliant ID at airport security checkpoints after May 7th will result in travelers being denied boarding. Passengers are advised to plan ahead and renew or obtain the necessary identification documents well in advance to avoid disruptions to their travel plans.
