New Delhi: The Congress Party has filed a notice for a no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Tuesday. According to Congress Deputy Leader Gaurav Gogoi, the notice was submitted after meeting with the Lok Sabha Secretary General. The party has reportedly collected signatures from over 100 Members of Parliament (MPs) to support their motion.
Congress has accused the Speaker of partiality, highlighting issues such as the denial of speaking opportunities to Rahul Gandhi and the suspension of eight Congress MPs. The party expressed its outrage over the Speaker’s allegations that women Congress MPs would attack the Prime Minister. Sources within Congress have revealed that a total of 118 MPs have signed the motion.
According to Article 94(c) of the Indian Constitution, it is mandatory to provide a notice 14 days in advance to remove the Speaker. Following this deadline, the motion must be approved in the House. The decision to move forward with the no-confidence motion comes after prolonged discussions among opposition leaders in light of recent events in the House, which have seen a series of adjournments.
Congress sources claim that Rahul Gandhi attempted to raise critical issues related to the India-U.S. trade agreement during the session but was denied permission to do so by the Speaker. Opposition leaders have expressed their concerns that the parliamentary proceedings appear to be limited solely to the government.
In response to these criticisms, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju stated that the opposition lacks the necessary numbers to push the motion forward. The decision regarding the no-confidence motion against Speaker Om Birla was made during a meeting of the INDIA coalition led by Mallikarjun Kharge. Although some members initially suggested submitting a complaint letter to the Speaker, they ultimately decided to pursue the no-confidence motion instead.
