Kolkata: The political landscape in West Bengal has heated up dramatically with the recent entry of the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The agency has launched raids on the Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC), a political consulting firm, leading to significant political tension in the state. The ED’s operations have targeted multiple offices associated with I-PAC, including the residence of its director, Pratik Jain, as part of an investigation into a money laundering case.
In response to the ED’s actions, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has made explosive remarks, addressing Prime Minister Narendra Modi directly. She urged him to control his Home Minister Amit Shah, suggesting that if the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is unable to compete with her party, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), in a democratic manner, then there is no need for them to interfere in West Bengal. Banerjee accused the central government of using agencies to undermine the TMC’s strategies and integrity, asserting that such tactics would ultimately backfire against the BJP.
While ED officials were conducting searches at Jain’s residence, Mamata Banerjee and Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma arrived at the scene. During her visit, Banerjee condemned the raids as unconstitutional and suggested they were part of a larger political conspiracy. She claimed that the ED’s intrusion was aimed at unearthing the TMC’s political strategies, candidate lists, and confidential information. “They are trying to seize our hard drives,” she stated, emphasizing the severity of the situation.
Banerjee went on to allege that the ED’s forensic team had reportedly transferred data from their operations, claiming they took away essential documents related to finances and political operations. She highlighted the contrast between the scrutiny faced by her party and the lack of action against the BJP, which she accused of possessing vast wealth without facing similar investigations from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or ED.
The ED has stated that the raids are linked to investigations regarding money laundering, indicating that funds may have been funneled to I-PAC. While specifics about the files seized remain unclear, one document reportedly noted a reference to “February 2022,” alongside travel records of TMC leaders, including mentions of MP Mahua Moitra.
