Malayalam superstar Mammootty recently opened up about his health struggles for the first time, shedding light on the invaluable lessons learned during his period of illness. The actor faced health issues last June, which prompted him to take a break from acting to focus on his recovery. Now back in the industry, Mammootty reflects on the importance of health and the often-overlooked senses of taste and smell.
In a candid discussion, he expressed, “The value of our senses is truly understood only when we lose them.” Mammootty revealed that he experienced the loss of taste and smell for an extended period, which caused him significant distress. He noted, “When you can’t perceive certain scents while breathing, it brings about a sense of anxiety. I faced such difficulties for some time. Slowly, I am beginning to regain those abilities, but only after losing them did I realize their true worth.”
The actor emphasized the significance of everyday sensations, such as hearing and smell, which many people take for granted. “When someone speaks loudly, we often ask them to lower their voice, simply because we can hear. But for those who cannot hear, every sound is irrelevant, and they remain silent. The ability to hear is indeed a blessing,” he stated.
Mammootty, born on September 7, 1951, in Chandeeroor, Alappuzha district of Kerala, began his acting career in 1971 with a minor role in the film “Anubhavangal Paalichakal.” His breakthrough came with “Vilkanundu Swapnangal,” where he was cast as the lead. Throughout his illustrious career, he has acted in over 400 films, averaging more than twenty films a year.
His contributions to the film industry have not gone unnoticed; Mammootty was honored with the Padma Bhushan award for his exceptional work. Currently, he is appearing in roles in films like “Patriots” and “Character,” continuing to captivate audiences with his performances.
Mammootty’s reflections serve as a reminder of the fragility of health and the importance of appreciating the simple joys of life, particularly the senses that enhance our daily experiences. As he continues to navigate his career and personal challenges, his words resonate with many, inspiring them to cherish their well-being and the world around them.
In light of his recent experiences, the actor encourages others to be mindful of their health and to recognize the gifts of their senses. His journey underscores the idea that true appreciation often comes from adversity, making his story not just one of resilience but also of profound wisdom.
