The film ‘Sinners’ has made history at the Oscars by securing an unprecedented 16 nominations for the 98th Academy Awards. Directed by Ryan Coogler, this American period horror film has broken the all-time record for the most nominations in Oscar history. The main event is scheduled to take place on March 15 this year in the United States, which will be March 16 according to Indian Standard Time.
On Thursday, actors Danielle Brooks and Louis Pullman announced the nominations, highlighting the film’s achievements across multiple categories, including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay. The buzz surrounding ‘Sinners’ has made it the talk of the town, surpassing the previous record held by films such as ‘All About Eve’ (1950), ‘Titanic’ (1997), and ‘La La Land’ (2016), which each received 14 nominations.
Following ‘Sinners’, the film ‘One Battle After Another’ received 13 nominations, while ‘Frackingston’, ‘Marty Supreme’, and ‘Sentimental Value’ garnered nine nominations each. ‘Hamnet’ also found recognition with eight nominations. This year marks the introduction of a new category, ‘Casting Director’, with nominations announced alongside the traditional categories.
In the Best Picture category, ‘Sinners’ will compete with nine other films, including ‘F1’, ‘The Secret Agent’, ‘Begonia’, and ‘One Battle After Another’. In the Best Director category, Ryan Coogler (for ‘Sinners’), Chloé Zhao (for ‘Hamnet’), Josh Safdie (for ‘Marty Supreme’), Paul Thomas Anderson (for ‘One Battle After Another’), and Trier (for ‘Sentimental Value’) are all vying for the prestigious award.
Timothée Chalamet has made headlines as the youngest actor to receive three nominations at the age of 30. Additionally, Ruth E. Carter received a nomination for Best Costume Design for her work on ‘Sinners’, marking her fifth Oscar nomination and making her the only Black woman in Oscar history to achieve this milestone.
Another remarkable nomination goes to 73-year-old Delroy Lindo for his performance in the film, marking his first Oscar nomination. Wagner Moura has also made history as the first Brazilian actor to receive an Oscar nomination for his role in ‘The Secret Agent’.
The Warner Bros. studio has achieved a notable feat with 30 nominations across its films this year. However, Indian cinema faced disappointment as the Hindi film ‘Homebound’ was submitted by the Film Federation of India for the Best Foreign Language Film category but failed to secure a nomination. Other Indian films such as ‘Kantara: Chapter 1’, ‘Mahavatar Narasimha’, ‘Tanvi: The Great’, ‘Tourist Family’, and ‘Sister Midnight’ also did not receive nominations, which has been a source of disappointment for many fans.
As the excitement builds towards the Oscars, the film industry is abuzz with discussions about ‘Sinners’ and the implications of its record-breaking nominations. With its innovative storytelling and critical acclaim, the film has undoubtedly set a new benchmark in cinematic achievements.
