₹500 “Holy Dip” Scam at Mahakumbh 2025 Sparks Outrage

A controversial new service at Mahakumbh 2025 is charging devotees ₹500 for a “holy dip” ritual that many are labeling outright fraud. This so-called service claims that dipping a photocopy of a devotee’s picture into the sacred Triveni Sangam will cleanse their sins, even if they are not physically present.

Promoters call this a “once-in-144-years” opportunity, urging people not to miss their “last chance” for blessings. They even claim the ritual will bring divine favor from ancestors, further fueling outrage among critics who see this as blatant religious profiteering.

Public Reaction:

  • Supreme Court lawyer Sanjay Hegde mocked the scheme, sarcastically asking if sending a photocopy of ₹500 would yield the same result.
  • Many have condemned the practice as a scam preying on people’s faith. One critic questioned, “Where is it written that sins can be erased this way?”
  • Some services are even offering to send “holy soil” from the riverbed, along with video proof of the ritual, further drawing criticism for commercializing religious devotion.

Warning to Devotees:

Critics argue that such schemes exploit blind faith, turning sacred traditions into profit-driven enterprises. It’s strongly advised to avoid falling for such commercialized rituals that undermine the true essence of faith and devotion.
